Efficiency programs

Smart Energy

Smart Energy programs help customers of participating UAMPS member utilities use less energy and lower their bills.

Programs

Incentives are offered through your local member utility, so what is available depends on where you live. Each application states its own current amounts, deadlines, and eligibility.

Home Energy Savings

Cash incentives when you buy energy-efficient appliances and lighting fixtures from participating retailers. Every appliance below is claimed on the same application, and that application lists the full range of products currently covered.

Who can participate: Residential customers of participating UAMPS energy partners. Check with your local utility to confirm it takes part.

  • Clothes washers

A qualifying washer can use up to 40% less energy and 40% less water than a conventional machine — around 7,800 gallons of water a year. They also extract more water during the spin cycle, cutting drying time and wear on clothes.

  • Dishwashers

Qualifying dishwashers use 25% less energy and up to 45% less water. Replacing a machine made ten years ago can save more than $25 a year in energy costs.

  • Freezers

Qualifying freezers use 20% less energy than a standard model, cutting energy costs by up to $75 a year.

  • Refrigerators

A qualifying refrigerator can use up to 30% less energy, and more precise temperature control keeps food fresh for longer.

  • Electric water heaters

After heating and cooling, water heating is often the largest energy use in a home, and most tanks lose energy through their walls even when no hot water is drawn. Newer efficient models are better insulated. Water heaters fail with little warning, so plan ahead — consider replacing one that leaks or is more than seven years old.

  • Lighting fixtures

Efficient fixtures save year after year, and many are designed for LED and compact fluorescent bulbs, adding savings on replacements. Worth considering when remodelling or building.

  • Portable evaporative coolers

Evaporative coolers use up to 75% less energy than central air conditioning to cool the same area.

  • Room air conditioners

ENERGY STAR qualified room air conditioners use 10% less energy than conventional models, saving an average of $14 a year on the electricity bill.

Cool Cash Program

Incentives toward higher-efficiency heating and cooling. Many Utah households assume upgrading means moving from a rooftop evaporative cooler to central air, but Utah's climate suits evaporative cooling well — and it is no longer confined to the roof. Modern systems install indoors and vent through existing ducts, cutting summer electricity costs against central air. Where central air is the right choice, proper equipment, sizing, installation and maintenance make a large difference to efficiency, so incentives cover those too.

Who can participate: Residential electric customers of participating UAMPS energy partners. Participation differs by measure and by city, so confirm with your local utility before buying.

See Ya' Later Refrigerator

An old refrigerator or freezer in the garage or basement is often a serious energy drain, especially as a second unit somewhere hot. UAMPS will collect and recycle it, and pay you for the privilege. Look for an ENERGY STAR model when you replace it — that may earn an incentive of its own.

Who can participate: Residential electric customers of participating UAMPS partners. Rocky Mountain Power customers do not qualify. You must own the units, and there is a limit of two per address.

How to apply: Call UAMPS at 1-888-365-1558 to arrange collection. Have your electric utility, account number, the address where the appliance is, and a contact phone number ready — these establish eligibility. Book through UAMPS rather than the recycler directly: pickups arranged straight with 1-800-GOT-JUNK are not approved for a rebate, and you would have to pay for the collection yourself. A check is mailed six to eight weeks after collection.

  • What qualifies

Working refrigerators and freezers of at least 10 cubic feet, measured inside. Please empty the unit before it is collected.

Commercial Lighting

Efficiency incentives for business and commercial lighting retrofits, available to commercial electric customers of participating Smart Energy partners. Preauthorization is required for every incentive, so apply before starting work.

Who can participate: Commercial electric customers of participating UAMPS energy partners. Confirm participation with your utility.

How to apply: Complete the application including Exhibit A. Your Smart Energy partner conducts the preauthorization inspection, after which an Incentive Offer Letter is sent to you. Sign and return it to UAMPS Smart Energy, 155 North 400 West, Suite 480, Salt Lake City, UT 84103. Once the lighting work is finished, call 1-888-365-1558 to book the post-installation inspection. The incentive check is issued after that inspection.

Low-Income Weatherization

Weatherization services at no cost to income-qualifying Utah households. This program is run by the Utah Division of Housing & Community Development, not by UAMPS.

Who can participate: Income-qualifying households in Utah.

How to apply: Contact the Utah Division of Housing & Community Development for eligibility and to apply. Call 1-877-488-3233 for information.
